a little vegetable humor…. or not…. These are my first yellow bell peppers. Finally. Along with a nice red Anaheim chile, an orange Habanero, and a Giant Belgium and Pink Beauty tomato.

shell beans
I planted several types of shell beans this year, but was bad about labeling them. I’m not sure what varieties these are. Nevertheless, I like the way all the colors look together. I am not going to dry these beans, but will eat them fresh, or semi-dry, as they are in the photo. They won’t need to cook as long as dry shell beans and are supposed to taste better. We’ll see. Here’s a list of all the types of beans I remember planting this year, mostly just small patches…
basil harvest
I like a nice big garbage bag full of basil at the end of summer. This one should get us through the winter with plenty of pesto. basil (Ocimum basilicum)
today’s chile harvest
I like to wait until my chiles get full ripe (red or orange) to pick them. These varieties are cayenne, habanero (the orange one) and Anaheim (the big one). Skippy and the great pumpkin
For years I have been trying to grow a giant pumpkin. I am so pleased to harvest this beauty today! Here it is. Fully documented with photos. The variety is Big Rock, seeds are from Johnny’s. I grew four plants – two at my community plot and two at home. Only one fruit set – this one! It bloomed in late July at my community plot, grew fast, then turned orange this week. It was resting a rock and got a bit scarred on one side before a fellow gardener…

mini watermelon
Wouldn’t it be nice to grow a real watermelon! This is my prize – not. Oh well…. Only 2 3/4 inches in diameter and 6.5 oz in weight. I was hoping it would get bigger, but this week I noticed it made a hollow sounding “thump” when I thumbed it. Ripe! Sure enough, its was nice and red inside. Sweet and cute as could be. Just way way too small. I guess it didn’t get enough of some important nutrient to grow large. Probably not enough sun. I have another…
harvest – beets, broccoli and beans
Yesterday I picked a great big head of broccoli, three nice Chiogga beets and a handful of long green beans. Also a couple tomatoes and some basil. These vegetables were delicious for dinner along with some of my potatoes. I parboiled the potatoes 5 minutes and cooked the beets in foil in the oven for 30 minutes, then peeled and sliced them. Then everything got roasted on the grill outside. Broccoli cooks great on the grill, even beet greens are really nice grilled. All you need is a grill pan…
This is a journal of my vegetable gardens. Skippy thinks the garden is his, even though I do all the work. We're located near Boston, in USDA zone 6. I have bees, chickens, fruit trees and berry bushes, too. I use all sustainable organic methods and strive to grow all of my family's vegetables myself. -Kathy
