the middle of winter

I certainly feel like it’s the middle of winter right now. We’ve had 25 inches of snow in the past couple weeks, only a couple days with blue skies, but fortunately not too cold for having fun snowshoeing with the dogs. I think this is why Valentine’s Day comes at this time – it’s the time for chocolate and … well… hanging out with the special someone before you get all busy with planting, transplanting, growing, weeding, harvesting, canning, cooking…… Cheers to the icy season!

Charley with snow flakes

All right all ready with the April snow!!! What a slow spring!! We’re still having temperatures in the 30-40’s (F). Charley likes it. I’m looking forward to 50-60’s. I hear it’ll get warm next Thursday. I won’t hold my breath.

Charley

Charley follows me everywhere, especially out to the garden. He’s a year and 2 months old now. I still call him a puppy since he bounds around and plays all the time. He’s curious and nosy. Sniffs and tastes everything in my garden. His favorite is fresh broccoli – any part of the plant. He’s very good and has learned where he is allowed to walk and where he can and can’t dig. I rarely need to say “Paws off” or “No dig” anymore. He still has those dark black,…

Charley and my potatoes

I dug a bushel of potatoes this year. Pretty good for me. I had three rows about 6 feet each. Probably 18 plants. I grew only two varieties this year. I dug one row of La Ratte fingerlings early and we’ve eaten them all already. These are Green Mountain. A great producer, storage, and all purpose cooking. They are delicious baked, fried, or sauteed.  Charley likes them a lot!!

boating

When we’re not gardening, we’re out boating! Suzie (4 yrs old) is in yellow and Charley, my BIG puppy (10 mo) is in red. We’re on out way out onto the pond.

spring is here!

It’s spring! Astronomically – if not our temperatures, which will go down to the teens and low 20’s, much of this week. But my garden soil is WORKABLE! Yeah. Charley and I checked it out this afternoon. Nothing is frozen and it’s not muddy. Just nice planting soil. We even saw a nice little earthworm in the soil. Time to get out my pea seeds.

a beautiful day

The sun was warm and I was working with my dogs right next to my garden today. Pretty good. I’m not quite working inside the garden yet – but seems like that may be soon. I cleared overgrown briars just behind my garden fence. Huge prickly multiflora rose and wild raspberry canes. The area is about a 15 foot piece of land between my fence and a little brook. Long ago, I can see a gardener planted ornamental plants there, but the yard has had 10 years or so of…
