We are having a rainy day. I’m getting time to write blog posts (finally !) and my garden is getting lots of free water. It’s great. Here are a bunch of photos I took just now during a break in the rain.

It’s been so hot and dry! It early in the year to have this heat here. I don’t make to to my community garden more than once a week or so and the soil is just dust now. To conserve water I used black plastic and chopped hay today. I laid down the black plastic and planted 18 tomatoes in it. Then I spread chopped hay around all the other plants. May 4: The peas are a few inches high, cover crop of winter rye is tall in some beds, and winter beds have greens growing. May 11: I just turned under the winter rye, crabapples and tulips are in bloom. May 30: I just planted tomatoes, eggplants, and peppers. Alliums are blooming. I’ve been working in my plot a few hours today. It’s very hot, but tomorrow nice rains are predicted so I’m planting fall seedlings and seeding a winter cover crop. I also dug my second of three rows of potatoes – the seedlings went in on top of this freshly dug soil. Escarole, radicchio, lettuce, arugula, broccoli, kailan (Chinese kale), and spinach. I haven’t posted many of my photos recently, so I’m putting together some collections. This is my backyard garden from early April until yesterday. Spring. By the end of summer, there won’t be any dirt showing.
This is a journal of my vegetable gardens. Skippy thinks the garden is his, even though I do all the work. We're located near Boston, in USDA zone 6. I have bees, chickens, fruit trees and berry bushes, too. I use all sustainable organic methods and strive to grow all of my family's vegetables myself. -Kathy
