Overabundance, excess, surplus, flood, overload, surfeit, glut, oversupply, extra, excessive, too much ……. I was able to keep up with my spring lettuce this year even though there was a lot of it. And there has been a lot of broccoli, but not too much. But the favas and the summer squash are another story. They just won’t stop. Vicia faba Cucurbita pepo (squash)

This is a collection of photos of my harvests from the past two weeks. We took a big bag of vegetables up to a cabin in New Hampshire and enjoyed these while on vacation. They are shown in the last photo above. I spread all the vegetables out on the chopping board. I’m keeping track of my harvests this year by taking a photo of each. Here are harvests from the past few days. Much too much lettuce right now, but better too much than too little. I hope it holds up. Lots of radish – all different shapes. The carrot thinnings are really tasty. My squash rotted at the bud end. Too much water or no pollination? I don’t know which. But I’m worried that I haven’t seen many bees this year. Definitely no honeybees. Where are the bees?Daucus carota

This is what I found in the garden today. Since it was also the first day of our local Farmer’s Market, our dinner plates were almost 100% local food. I bought local bread and kielbasa to go with my fresh peas, lettuce and other vegetables. Delicious. I specially enjoyed the baby carrots. I had to thin my carrot patch a bit. I left the teeny ones out for the rabbit, but the larger ones were really nice in our salad. They have a nice sweet fresh orangy flavor. My dad…

Plenty of lettuce, radish and green onions. A bit of broccoli. And a fava bean! My first one. I went ahead and picked it even though its too small – about 5 inches. I wanted to try it. Actually it didn’t taste ripe. I’ll let the rest get bigger. Fava beans should be picked when the pods are 6-8 inches long, filled out with beans, but still green. I’m really pleased with the crunchy red lettuce and bright pink radish from my community plot! I pulled four radish today. Two were round and two were woody and thin and went to the compost pile. Just one head of lettuce makes more than enough for two servings of salad. Its prime lettuce season! I’m not so pleased with how much sun my hands are getting. I try to remember the sunscreen, but I usually forget… harvests from my vegetable gardensradish (Raphanus sativus)

round black Spanish radish

Last year I bought some radish seeds called a round black Spanish. Well, they didn’t even sprout for me, but I’ll try again this year and give them more sun. In the mean time, I was surprised to come across the same radish in my local supermarket. It was grown in Vermont. It turns out that the round black Spanish radish is a nearly forgotten vegetable.
