harvest of big beets

I just love great big, dark red beets. I pulled lots of them this weekend. The big dark ones are a variety called Lutz. They are recommended as good winter keepers. I expect they will sweeten as they keep. I’ll save these in my basement in a paper bag along with my potatoes. I have planted a fall crop of these that I hope will grow in time before the frosts come. Even if they don’t, I have plenty of beets! The lighter colored beets at the right of the…

weekend potato harvest

With a bit of help from my 15 year old son, I harvested a nice box full of potatoes on Saturday. I suppose if we were a bit more careful we wouldn’t have pierced so many of them with the digging fork. We did our best. I have mostly white fingerling potatoes, but also some big Russets and reds. They are delicious now – crisp new potatoes. I’ll hang these in a paper bag from the rafters in the basement. I think they will last us a few months. A…

I am so lucky this year to have such good food, free for the harvest from my gardens! These are photos of some of my harvests from the past few days. My favorites are the beets, potatoes, carrots, beans and even the overabundant squash. Just one? – my real favorite this week is probably the Chiogga beets and tender greens. The potatoes are also one of my favorites. Tonight I had dinner guests and before the meal, we headed over to the garden and dug in the potato patch. I…

Capucijner peas

My Capucijner soup pea crop amounted to 2 cups this year – twice what I got last year. Its drying now in a bowl in my kitchen. I stir them often and remove the few peas that get moldy. Peas and beans for drying are usually left on the vine until they’re dry, but it was much too damp for that this spring. They’re pretty much dry now after a week in the kitchen. I thought I would have more soup peas this year. I saved an amount of seeds…

my first tomato

My orange tomatoes have ripened first this year. This is a variety called Orange Blossom. Perfectly ripe today. I had a few slices on their own, the rest on a yummy steak sandwich for lunch. And then I had a second ripe orange tomato in a fresh potato salad for dinner. Delicious! Of five Farmer’s Market tomatoes I tried together last year, Orange Blossom one was the tastiest. It will look very nice with red and purple tomatoes when they ripen. For the past three years now, my first ripe…

my first potato harvest

I dug my first first potatoes today. I have a very large patch devoted to potatoes this year. About 5 x 15 feet. I am happy it seems successful so far. The plants grew nicely, flowered, and then this past week or so they started to die back. With all the rain, they got soggy (rotten stems, etc), and so today I chopped off all the stems and cleared the patch. Before and after photos are above. I pulled a handful of potatoes that were up near the surface. Some…

harvest

Here’s yesterday’s harvest. Skippy and I went out to our community plot with a big empty bag and came home with it full! At the very far left is a little bit of spring broccoli that is still producing florets. Then come some tricolored radish that I just started pulling. They are very pretty and perfectly spherical. The cukes, a pickling variety and a slicing variety called Rocky, and are coming in fast now, though they are still small. I try to pick the summer squash small before it gets…
