my first potato harvest

I cut down lots of my potato plants today because many have late blight. It looks like the potatoes are OK though. This is a pile of Russets I dug. They were volunteers in one of my paths. I was impressed with how many came from one plant. And how big they are already. They sure tasted yummy. potatoes (Solanum tuberosum)

a year of harvests

I put together photos of my garden harvests from the past year. I like to see how the crops changes from green to fruits to roots and back again. spring lettuce

Fresh lettuce is my favorite thing from the garden! I have my last head of supermarket lettuce in my fridge now and when its gone – I’ll start picking real garden lettuce. I’m so excited. I have a patch of Bibb, Boston and Prizehead ready to go. I’d like to remember to plant more this week. I’m wondering if its good timing to plant my summer crisp, a heat resistant variety. I think I will.

garlic scapes

This will be another item for my BBQ on Friday. Fresh garlic scapes. I’m deciding how to prepare them – pesto, sauteed, or garlic scape pizza…. Garlic scapes should be picked before they curl around to encourage formation of a larger garlic bulb. I’ve read that picking them well before they curl gives the most tender scapes. Last year mine were tasty, but tough. Next time I’m at my garden I’ll pick all of my scapes. Some are curling back double and some are still straight. garlic (Allium sativum)

first harvest of the season

My Mom beat me! Her arugula is this year’s first harvest. She planted her seeds out in the garden back in very early April, I think. I didn’t plant my early outdoor seeds on time this year for some reason (I think was busy making raised beds or some other excuse.) Anyway – Thanks Mom! Yummy, tangy, fresh, first-of-the-season arugula. Below is a picture of my parent’s garden. I’m helping a lot this year as my dad is recovering from back surgery.

a happy Easter with freshly dug potatoes

The over wintered potatoes I dug on Good Friday were grilled to perfection today (with onions) by the head griller here (my spouse). Really nice with spring lamb, broccoli and asparagus, spinach salad and dyed eggs. We were joined by my parents and had a good time together. I had a big surprise on awakening – kind of like Christmas – the Easter bunny left a couple gifts for me right in the middle of the dining room: a big red wheel barrow, a new rake and a garden shovel!…

a discovery – over wintered beets and potatoes!

I was amazed to find a pretty little Chiogga beet and two fingerling potatoes at my plot. They look great after that terrible winter. I’m looking forward to a taste of my garden tomorrow evening! (Maybe with some over wintered kale.) I’ll have to search through the soil for more. I knew there was one end of the potato bed that I didn’t search through good enough last year.

garden fresh popcorn

Popcorn! I’ve never made popcorn straight off the cob before. But its great. This ear was in my winter CSA distribution. I pushed the kernels off into a Whirly Pop. Added a bit of oil and heated it up. They popped fast. Salt and butter. Yum. A fast snack for the kids after a good hike in the snow. I’ve wondered about growing corn in my small garden. There’s nothing like fresh summer corn eaten right after you pick it. But it seems to take up so much space. And…
