These are the vegetables I harvested on Sunday. Four big hairy celeriac roots (below is before I trimmed the them), a couple potatoes, a couple red cabbage. Also some nice lettuce and escarole and a bunch of baby bok choy. The celeriac are one of the first crops planted and the last ones harvested. Very slow growing. I planted Feb 21, harvested Oct 31. Almost 9 months in the ground.

This is my harvest from Thursday. The last of my cucumbers, broccoli, beans, a few onions, a small cabbage and big bunches of parsley, sage and thyme. The broccoli looked nice, but wasn’t good. It had frosted a bit and was mushy after cooking. I’ll remember to pick this before temps go low next year. The bright red beans are Tongue of Fire shell beans. I shelled a few to see how they look. Green beans are mostly Fortex. A few Purple beans too. I got tired of eating fresh…

cheers to the harvest – winter radish martinis

My first homegrown winter radish! These are a special group of radish that need to be grown while day length is shrinking. They should be planted in late summer to mature about 2 weeks after the first frost. I pulled a few of mine a little early, but more are still in the ground. I planted these when my popcorn started to tassel – around the 25th of July. The mix I have is from Sand Hill Preservation Center and includes three types: China Rose, China White and Round Black…

end of the season harvest

(click on the photo for vegetable names) It was a good day for harvesting. Sunny and dry. No frost is in sight yet, but the days are getting so short and the warm weather crops aren’t growing any more. I spread everything out before packing it into bags. I picked all my chiles, eggplants, squashes, onions and pumpkins. Many of the onions hadn’t bulbed, but they are nice “spring onions”. These beds are now ready to clear, compost and seed with cover crop. I picked two heads of savoy cabbage…

Big Russets and a serious head of broccoli. I feel like a real farmer. I really enjoy running down to the garden instead of the supermarket! We ate these immediately. Pan fried potatoes, sliced thin and steamed broccoli. Yum!

This is the basil I harvested on Saturday. We trimmed the leaves off the stems, added olive oil and processed it. Its waiting in the fridge now til I buy pine nuts and Parmesan cheese. Then we (i.e. my husband) will turn it into pesto and freeze it. Its a bumper crop this year and should easily last us til next year.

These are some of my harvests from the past couple weeks. I picked one small but delicious Sugar Baby Watermelon. I was very pleased with this and will plant these again and try to do better next year. I had two plants and will try 6 next year. The tiny little melon on the plate with the watermelon is the single cantaloupe I got. A Charantais. Unripe miniature and not good tasting. It was not a good year for melons, and I made several mistakes with this crop. I scattered…

butternut squash harvest

This is my butternut squash harvest this year! Minus the 3 I’ve already given away. 23 squashes – 60 pounds total. I’m looking forward to enjoying lots of squash this winter. I had 5 plants, I think. So that’s 4 or 5 squash per plant each averaging 2 1/2 lbs. The biggest squash are 4-5 lbs and the smallest ones are just over 1 lb. I think my yield is actually lower than what’s advertised for this squash. Seems pretty amazing to me! The variety I grew is the original…
