My first harvest of summer squash (Cashflow zucchini and Zephyr yellow squash)! The ultimate summer crop. And beautiful beets (Detroit White, Chiogga and Lutz). I’m very pleased with my beets this year. Last year they were misshapen and hairy. This year, they are growing fast and are very nicely shaped. I guess its paid off to prepare a bed especially for roots that wasn’t amended with compost or manure. (Beets and other roots are light feeders and get hairy and misshapen with rich soil.) today’s harvest

Finally I have a chance to escape to the garden. This summer is turning out to be very busy and keeping me away from the plot. But with the regular rain, everything is growing fine without my attention. I have a fantastic crop of broccoli now ready to pick. Also the beets are sizing up. This harvest includes one head of broccoli (Blue Wind, Johnny’s), beets (Chiogga and Detroit White) and a couple little radish (French Breakfast).

lots of lettuce

Still plenty of lettuce coming from my cold frame. I’ve been picking it for a full month now. I have about 10 heads left in the frame and by the time they’re gone, the row I planted next to my tomatoes should be ready. I planted 4 9-packs with about 12 different varieties yesterday. I LOVE fresh lettuce!

first radish of the season

I’m a bit late in posting this. i pulled my first radish and picked my first peas of the season last weekend. The radish a nice little French Breakfast radish. Very crispy and mild. Yummy!

In previous years I have picked my first lettuce at the end of May or even early June. This year May 8!!! It has been a record warm spring here, but also my new cold frame is amazing. Once I pick my first lettuce, I can usually avoid buying any supermarket lettuce until October. I bet the cold frame will extend the fall end of the season too.

mizuna

I am researching mizuna. It was included in a fall greens mix I grew this year and did very well and tastes great. I had to post a photo and ask the name. Mizuna is a Japanese name used primarily for cultivated varieties of Brassica rapa (commonly known as field mustard or turnip mustard) or Brassica juncea (mustard greens, Indian mustard and leaf mustard). I harvested a few greens today. I wish I knew what they were. The enormous feathery-leaved plant at the left tastes a bit like arugula. It has a big thick white root. The dark green round leaved one I don’t know either. These two came in a mix of fall greens. I do know the bright green leaves -they are a broad-leaved escarole.

A dark and drizzly November day. Beautiful. This is just about our last harvest of the year. I started our Thanksgiving preparations by bringing home 4 bags full of vegetables. The parsnips smelled sweet as I tugged them out of the ground. The baby salad green and arugula look really nice.
