my favorite summer squash – sunburst patty pan

This is my favorite summer squash. Sunburst. A yellow patty pan. Its delicious. And this year is producing a very heavy harvest. I have two nice plants and am able to pick almost a squash a day. Like zucchini, I have to keep an eye on them or they’ll turn into giants. Someone asked me recently about the difference between male and female flowers and the lower photos show both pretty well. today’s harvest

Amazing how fast things are growing in the hot weather we FINALLY have this week. The garden is awesome. Overrun with squash vines. Fantastic cabbage heads. Corn is taller by the minute. I could sit and watch all day! Today I harvested lettuce, dill, patty pan and zucchini squash, a giant Chiogga beet, a couple small onions, a green Thai hot pepper, and a handful of broccoli. Oh, and I almost forget, another cherry tomato.

Mom and Dad’s harvest

My dad sent me this photo of the vegetables they picked from their garden this week. Looks like they are eating well. Many of these are plants I grew from seed this spring. My parents’ garden always produces super broccoli. And they are ahead of me on the summer squash and cucumbers. I’m wondering if that is a garlic head in there? I’ll have to ask them.

today’s harvest

The vegetables are coming in very fast now. Fava beans, summer squash, potatoes, radish, lettuce and garlic today. I dug about 30 heads of garlic which I will dry a few days and then braid and store in the basement.

harvests

These are vegetables I harvested last week. A big perfect beet and a big odd ball beet. (Lutz and Chiogga) I suspect both will taste delicious. Also a nice bunch of radish. Half of my radish this year are very tough and fibrous. So hard I can’t get a knife through to slice them. The other half are nice and crispy. I don’t know what’s wrong with the fibrous ones. pea green

I picked a big handful of peas yesterday. A very small yeild for my big patch and big hopes. But, still a very pretty bowl of green. (I think my main problem with the peas this year was slugs and lack of sun. I would have thought the cool wet weather would have been perfect. I planted more two weeks ago and these are growing great. Much better than my spring germination and growth rates. They are in a very shaded part of the garden so they may do best…

fava beans are ripe

The first ripe fava beans are at the back off my little patch and I didn’t see them until I was walking by outside the garden. So I reached my hand through the fence and picked a couple. The young ones are yummy on the grill.

potatoes, potatoes

On Sunday, a week after cutting down most of my badly blight damaged (Late Blight) potato plants, I found more blight damage. Actually all my varieties now show a lot of blight spots. But the earlier varieties are worse off. The Russet foliage (a late variety) is nice and green still, but leaves have lots of brown/moldy looking spots. The Red Gold (early variety) plants were yellowed falling over and with brown/moldy leaf spots. Its normal for the plants to die back, and I don’t know how much the blight…

green tomatoes

After complaining about Late Blight on my tomatoes plants at my community plot, it seemed a good day to photograph the beautiful green tomatoes on my 8 healthy plants at home. They are growing fast. The plants have reached the top of my 5.5 ft supports already. Lots of green tomatoes almost showing signs of color. A few hot days and they’ll ripen fast.tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum)
