  My Chinese pole beans (Asian white pole beans) are ready! These are my favorite bean. Big and lumpy – a green and white color mix. They are crisp and tender even when they grow very big. A friend gave me some seeds. I’ve grown them for three years now and have to make sure to save a handful of beans to plant next year.

Chioggia beets

It seems that ]my Chiogga beets are different every year. Three years ago (first year I grew them) they were very red and I could just barely see the striping and they tasted fantastic. Then the next year, they were tough and woody and pale. Now this year, they are striped like candy canes! And they taste great. They must be sensitive to the weather and/or my soil.

Pumpkins, summer squash, cucumbers, and even a few TOMATOES! The onions were harvested last week and have now finished drying enough to clean them up a put them down in the basement.

Long Island Cheese pumpkin

The stem of my big early Long Island cheese pumpkin was broken off completely today when I went to my community plot. This pumpkin set fruit midway up on my fence and the weight of it was more than the vine could hold. The stem broke part way through a couple weeks ago. It looks like its nearly ripe. Its mostly beige colored, with only a few areas of greenish tint. Very early for a pumpkin. I’ll keep it on my kitchen counter for a month before I use it…

This week’s newsletter from a local farm says that they are having an unprecedented summer squash and cucumber glut! Great. Its perfect weather for these. They also say their melons, eggplant and corn are also doing great in this weather and are looking forward to good harvests of these. Me too! But the hot weather hasn’t been good for lettuce and fall plantings of broccoli-related crops. Same here. I hope my recently sowed fall broccoli and lettuces will sprout.

garlic harvest

This week I finished harvesting my garlic. I harvested half of it (New York White and Susanville softneck, plus some hardneck varieties I saved from past years) two weeks ago (July 2). July 10, I pulled the giant cloves of German Extra Hardy and Duganski hardneck varieties. A fantastic harvest! I have enjoyed reading a book called “The Complete Book of Garlic” by Ted Meredith to learn about when to harvest garlic. Its a very informative book that the published sent to me to review. My first ripe tomato was today. A nice little sungold cherry. I didn’t get a good photo of it. This is about 2 weeks earlier than I usually get my first tomato.
