garden notes

I’m way backed up on recording my garden activities. I have about 500 photos to sort, maybe 10 topics to post. I’ll gradually get to posting these in the next few days (I hope). Here’s a quick summary. – A writer and photographer from the Boston Globe came to my house yesterday to see my garden produce and check out my pumpkin bread recipe. – I counted my butternut squash too soon. I found 2 more today! They are not ripe yet, hanging outside my fence, hidden in the weeds. – I ordered garlic for planting a few days ago. Decided I did not have enough this year to use for planting as well as eating. I’ll eat my whole crop. I ordered 1 lb from Territorial Seed Co (2 varieties – their special combo of a white soft neck and a purple hard neck) – about 60 cloves total for planting later this…

garden update

– Late Blight hit my home tomatoes yesterday. The New Girl and Orange Blossom plant are heavily infected. Others OK so far. I’m picking the fruits now as soon as they show any red to ripen inside.– Funny how some of my eggplants and peppers are rotting. The plants look OK. I’m wondering if its late blight. I’m thinking it probably is, but I read that this is unusual. Hmmm.– I picked all my popcorn – about 50 ears! (I’ll get a good count soon.) Its waiting to be shucked…

garden update

Good – I picked 4 ears of BEAUTIFUL popcorn. I am so happy with these!!!– I have harvested 2 little pumpkins and 3 big butternut squash so far. – My two giant pumpkins both look bigger than the 11 pounder I grew last year. They are just starting to show a little orange.– My flowers are brightening up the garden very nicely now: big purple zinnias, an ornamental bean (I have forgotten the name) and bright marigolds.– Lots of eggplant!– Time to make pesto ASAP.– And time to make tomato…

garden work

A fantastic day in the garden. – I picked a handful of tomatoes in my home garden. Lots of cherries and my first two big ones: New Girls – picked on the orangey side to ripen inside because I’m afraid late blight could hit them any day now. – I bagged the top half of my compost pile, getting rid of all the tomato and potato waste that is contaminated with late blight. Interesting to see what/who was living in the pile: lots of worms and a very bug garter…

Yesterday I spent several hours at my plot. Aside from weed whacking and pruning the weeds in the community garden paths, I: – chopped down the Red Gold potato plants and two more tomato plants because of blight– dug all the fingerling potatoes volunteers from the path– dug one plant of Red Gold’s– pulled fat green caterpillars off the cabbage– watched the favas and zucchini grow for a while– admired the lettuce– harvested on garlic bulb to see if they’re ready yet– sprayed potato and tomato plants heavily with copper…

plot work

Its been nearly a week since I have been out to my plot. Last time I was there, I found several spots of late blight on my potatoes. I was expecting the worst today. I haven’t been out to the garden because of the constant rain this past week. I suppose the garden looked better than I expected. Here’s a list: – Fava beans look great, lots of tiny pods forming.– Corn is nearly waist high and looks great.– The pumpkins are starting to vine, maybe 3 feet long now.…

garden progress

I was comparing this year’s garden with my records from last year. It seems many plants are growing slower this year. Lettuce: Last year I was harvesting lots of lettuce by now early June – this year I’m hoping to start picking lettuce this week. It looks beautiful and lots of it, but ts still a bit small. I planted the same varieties on the same dates both year’s so I think the weather is the difference. Peas: My peas are doing miserably this year. Very poor sprouting, (I think…

List of today’s garden work (all in my home garden): Replanted more pea seeds in areas where none came up yet.Planted Chinese pole beans, Tongue of Fire shell beans, and Fortex pole beans.Planted 1 row of soy beans (Butterbeans).Planted dahlia tubers.Added lower trellis to cucumber trellis. A couple days ago:Transplanted cucumbers.Brought plants to my parents garden: tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, pumpkins and peppers.

Updates:– Fava beans have sprouted– All 10 recently planted asparagus have sprouted– Carrots are sprouting well– Sunday I planted parsnips in spaces between garlic, also radish and carrots– I removed flower stalks from the rhubarb– I’m starting to hill Norland, Green Mtn and Red Gold potatoes – Russets are growing slower– Sparrow chicks are peeping in bird house, no peeps from chickadee house yet– Squirrels ate a lot of my peas, but half of what I planted are 3-5 inches tall– Also I forgot to use inoculant and this may…
