community plot work

(Click on the photo and mouse over for plant labels.) A good day for getting a few jobs done at the garden plot. Here’s what we did:– Clear out dead summer squash vines.– Remove all but 3 tomato vines and poles.– Pick dried beans.– Harvest broccoli.– Harvest basil.– Put up trellis for fall peas.– Weeding.In the plot expansion area:– More weed clearing.– Move the weed pile out of the area I plan to use as a garden.– Measure new space: its 12 ft by 21 ft. community plot expansion project

I was given permission to expand my plot about 15 feet to the east. This area is overgrown now with 10 foot weeds and a couple small buck thorn trees. There are also several good sized stumps and rocks to deal with. I’m looking forward to a couple hours of working on this today, before the rains of Hurricane Hanna come through over the weekend. community garden plot update

I missed going to my garden today with other activities to occupy us. I’m looking forward to a visit tomorrow. I’m trying to water the garden well daily. We aren’t getting much rain and I planted so many seeds earlier this week. I want to make sure they get a good start. I have a nice crop of basil, ready to be harvested. It will make a good project for tomorrow. We’ll cut it down, Pull off the leaves, process, then add olive oil pine nuts, Parmesan cheese and salt.…

Or should I say ‘garden fun day’. I love a Saturday when I can recruit help from my family in the garden. Today’s garden chores: 1. Fertilize. The main thing I wanted to do was fertilize today. Everything is growing so fast and I don;t want the nutrients to run low. I scattered granulated 5-10-5 (nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium) everywhere and watered it in well. I also added some Miracle-Gro Tomato Food (18-18-21). My dad found a nice article on tomato culture with fertilizer recommendations. “Tomatoes respond well to fertilizer applications, especially phosphorus. checking on the brassicas

I have kept my kale and broccoli under row cover to protect them from the cabbage worms. Today I peeked under for a check. I found five fat green cabbage worms helping themselves to the broccoli. Not too much damage, but the idea was to have no damage. It looks like I will need to replace the cover with one that has fewer holes in it. I left the five fat worms out on the walkway for the hungry baby sparrows and robins. I think also think the broccoli should…

always more work

Something about a garden. I thought earlier this week that I had done all the work the garden needed for the year. I thought I was caught up for a while. But today my spouse and I put in several hours of the Memorial Day morning at the plot. A pleasant way to spent the early day. community plot work

I did a number of little tasks in my community garden plot today. Its a wonderful place to spend the morning. The lilacs are in full bloom and so many birds singing. I planted seeds for three varieties of sunflowers, nasturiums, two varieties of soy beans, and a row of radish. I am running out of space, so I am planting along side the beds I laid out.
