seedlings

These are photos of my seedlings over the past 2 weeks. The tray at the top was started Jan 28. Mostly lettuce, endive and onions. I put them out in the cold frame around March 1. Some of the seedlings frosted because I didn’t realize the plastic panels of the cold frame ripped in the wind that week. The bottom seedlings were started Feb 26. Broccoli, celery, frissee, dill, radicchio and more onions. They are ready to go out to the cold frame soon.

Had my lights off the seedlings today to move things around and so I took some photos. They are growing fast! I’m thinking by March 1 they will need to go out to the cold frame.

My first sprout is a cute little endive from a seed mix I made. The lights are on and more are popping up fast, oblivious to the outside weather.

first seeds of the season are planted!

I planted 6 6-packs of seeds today!!! My planting 2011 garden season has officially begun! 1 6-pk leeks 1 6-pk onions (Ailsa Craig)1 6-pk onions (Frontier)1 6-pk lettuce mix1 6-pk endive mixhalf 6-pk perennial purple broccolihalf 6-pk celeriac I had written my plant labels a couple days ago, but didn’t end up planting, so I changed all the 1-25’s to 1-28. Nice to know they are now starting to come to life.

clean trays ready for planting

I don’t think plant trays are in the stores yet so I washed a few of the trays I used last year. I scrubbed them briefly, then rinsed them in dilute bleach (about 1:9). I am making some seed mixes now. Since I have picked out about 20 varieties of lettuce and endive that I want to plant soon, but its still early too plant too much, I think a mix will work well. whats in the cold frame

A couple weeks ago, I covered my cold frame with a tarp to protect against the snow of its first winter. Today I peeked under. Everything looks good. Spinach, lettuce, escarole, and broccoli. Temperatures have been about 32-35 inside (on a remote thermometer) even when its very cold outside. The plants are still small and aren’t growing any more. I’m hoping they’ll survive the winter and grow again when sun and temp’s increase. We’ll see. I have to remember to bring a bucket of water out – they tend to…

cold frame greens

I have lots of greens in my cold frame, but the questions: are they growing? I think they are, but slowly. I’m trying to compare this photo with the one I took 10 days ago (click the label “cold frame” below). I’m wondering if things will grow enough in the next 10 days to get a big salad bowl full of greens for Thanksgiving.

As the summer crops fade, I am increasing the numbers of seedling I’m planting. Mostly greens: lettuce of all types, arugula, spinach, endive and escarole and beets. They’ll go into my community plot after the squashes and corn are pulled (only 26 days until frost!! OMG). And then, they’ll go into my cold frame when the cucumbers finish. I had such a nice early spring cold frame full of greens that I’m looking forward to fall. I think they will grow well past the first frost. I’ve resorted to starting…

These are my little plants growing inside under the lights. With the hot dry summer weather and then pelting rain, its nice to baby them. I have several types of lettuce here, and some spinach. They’re ready to go outside soon. I checked my community plot today. I’ve been sowing seeds there regularly. Not much sprouted during hot dry weather in July and early August. Today I see several patches coming up. Nice pea sprouts, and a little bed of tiny lettuces. Also a row that looks like broccoli, but…
