I put my seedlings out in the sun for a couple hours for the first time today. Right at mid day. Its just under 50*F today and bright full sun. SO nice! It seems the little plants grew a whole inch while they were out. I’ll continue gradually increasing their time outside. My husband has purchased materials to make a cold frame for me. It was going to be ready this weekend, but we ended up pumping water out the basement instead of making it. Maybe next weekend….

sweet potato sprouts

I’m using my Christmas martini picks to support sweet potatoes in water glasses. They’re sprouting well. They grow slowly, so I’m glad I’ve started early. They are supposed to be a foot tall before planting out in May.

I started up 4 more milk bottles with perennial flowers: Rudbeckia Trilobia, Rudbeckia Goldsturm, Prairie Aster, and Lavender Dwarf Hidcote.

Seeds that have sprouted so far: onions, tomatoes, eggplants, parsley, thyme, lavender, broccoli and kale. Tomorrow I will take pictures of each.

I found 3 plastic milk jugs and planted then today. Two seeds I collected: Purple cone flower (Echinacea) and Feverfew (from Victoria’s garden). Also a package of lavender seeds. I used wooden labels inside the jugs. (Last time I did this, I wrote on jugs and ink washed off.) I tucked then the jugs in with some old hay out in the yard – and put my gnome in charge of them.

I have sprouts!!! My lights are on! My first sprouts of the 2010 season are Ruby Ring onions. Of eight onion varieties I planted, these are the first ones up. No sign of any of the others yet. Welcome little Ruby’s!
