Carrots: I’m just thinning them so for, but the little ones are tasty. The varieties from left are: Bolero, Mokum, Oxheart. Beets: This is my first beet harvest. Four varieties from left: ???, Chiogga, Blankoma, Merlin. And it’s my first TOMATO of the season. Yippee, but WOW, really late. (A previous harvest photo had a couple tomatoes that another gardener gave me.) The tomato variety is Tiren. The seedling was grown by Jane, a friend of my mom’s. It’s a Roma type. A super looking plant with fruit hanging heavy.…

I pulled 25 heads of garlic and cut most of my broccoli today. The upper photo is what I collected at my community plot. The lower one from, my home garden (and the chicken coop). I haven’t been to my community plot in a while I guess as those zucchini are enormous! Fortunately another gardener was glad to take three of them.

2014 harvests

 
 
What a year. Now I remember why I was busy! I love to look back and remember the harvests. It was my first year to harvest a full meal of asparagus. My best year for bok choi, beans, eggplants and cucumbers. And a fantastic year for popcorn and pears. The potatoes, peppers, squash and raspberries were good. I wonder what 2015 will bring.

today’s harvest – Happy Thanksgiving!

 
 
These are the greens I harvested for our Thanksgiving salad bowl. In spite of our normal weather for this time of year, we have bitter cold (20*F) and several inches of snow on the ground for Thanksgiving this year. My brother, traveling in to our house from western MA, has no power out in his area due to the snow storm. We will give thanks for the warmth of our homes and family and the abundance of our harvests.

Hard to believe we’ve had a second night at 22*F. Its so cold there’s a sheet of ice on the pond already. I was afraid everything in the garden would be frozen solid. I was pleasantly surprised. The bok choi I was waiting to harvest (for no good reason – it was very risky) looks beautiful. (I get so excited about pretty garden harvests!) I pulled a handful of tiny dark red beets. They even have a few nice leaves still. And I went ahead an picked a giant handful…
