growing fast – photos of my community plot

My plants are growing very fast, but still the gardens look like mostly dirt. The potatoes are getting very big. All my asparagus plants (10) sprouted and shoots are 5-15 inches tall now. Today I filled in with dirt to the top of the bed and accidentally broke off a thin shoot. So I ate it. Absolutely delicious!!! My popcorn is up now. Two dense rows of 2 inch plants. I’m planning to transplant some to thin the rows since I have room for a third row. How exciting. I’ve…

I did a bit of work today on my new beds. I want them to be fairly straight and level and have been working on this. The photos help me to see where the unevenness is. I’ve decided to bring some dirt in to fill them. I made a stone step today in the sloped area on the north west side of the plot. Skippy posed next to it.

Here’s a photo of my community garden plot that I took yesterday. This is the old west side of my plot – the newly added half is to the right of this photo. Click on the photo to see my mouse overs. So far, only the back left bed is mulched. I was lucky to find a couple bales of salt marsh hay today. ($9 a bale at my local True Value.) first frost (a light frost) at my community plot

It looks like my community garden plot had a light frost both of the past two nights. My tender crops (beans and eggplants) were killed yesterday and today the tops of my marigolds look singed. My semi-hardy (beets, carrots and endive) and hardy crops (broccoli, kale, peas and radish) (source) are doing fine. I will make a notation for my calendar for next year that these beans were planted too late for the community plot. They were just about to bloom. The last crop will need to go in 3…

finished !!

Don’t you love a clear plot of fresh dirt! We finished removing all of the stumps and rocks today. We moved two giant rocks under the lilac as benches. And I limed and seeded green manure/winter cover crop. I am imagining rows of productive crops next year…. (Tomorrow we will move the fence to encompass the newly cleared area.) community plot expansion project

the big rock

Well, I didn’t get out to my garden today so I’m posting these photos of “THE BIG ROCK”. Last weekend, the big rock took up several hours of our time. It was too heavy to move out of my new plot space and too big to leave in place. It was a multi step process with lots of negotiations to finally dispose of it. 1. still raining……

I thought the weather was clearing when I went to the plot today. But no! Just as Skippy and I got there, the sky opened up. Skippy was pleased when I grabbed the tarp that covered my lawn mower and propped it up with garden poles. The two of us sat on a towel under it (Skippy is such a clean dog..) and watched the downpour. It lasted about 15 minutes. After the downpour ended I worked in the drizzle, but Skippy was very glad to stay under the cover.…
