A real prize! Two Giant Belgium tomatoes are ripe on the vine. Looks like this plant will only produce 3 or 4 fruits this year. They are bigger than last year’s and very meaty and sweet.

And the winners were …. Cherokee Purple and Sungold! I have eight varieties of tomatoes along the south side of my house. Seven were perfectly ripe and we tasted them side-by-side. 1. I have 7 varieties of tomatoes on my counter now! New Girl, Orange Blossom, Big Beef, Sudduth strain Brandywine, Cherokee Purple, Mortgage Lifter and Sun Gold. I’ll check for more tomorrow and then we’ll have a serious taste test. Any bets on the winner? The Mortgage Lifter (a gift from Ohio Heirloom seeds) sure is good lookin’.

at last – it’s tomato season!
I have lots of Sungold cherry tomatoes now (from two plants), and a few ripe New Girl and Orange Blossoms too. Big Beef are ripening fast. The heirlooms are sizing up: Brandywine Sudduth strain, Giant Belgium, Purple Calabash, Box Car Willie, and Mortgage Lifter. Tomato varieties I’ve lost to Late Blight so far are: Pink Beauty, Cherokee Purple, Opalka, San Marzano, Early Girl and Hillbilly. late blight continues to kill tomatoes
On yesterday’s visit to my community plot I found late blight on all of my remaining tomato plants. My next chore will be to remove them all. Bag and dispose in the trash. I was hoping a few of my plants would have survived, but all have succumbed. 16 plants – 11 varieties that I babied since March. Late blight seem to be the only conversation topic I hear this week at our community gardens. I hear yelling from across the way about newly discovered dead tomato plants. I hear long technical discussions among groups of gardeners. And everyone spends a fair amount of time walking around and looking at tomato and potato plants in other plots. People come by my plot to chat and they know whose plants look good and whose are dead. They remind me that I should be bagging and destroying the foliage so…
gnome tending tomatoes
I was asked the other day where my gnome has been. Well, no where special. Just hanging out under the oregano. But for a change, I moved him over to the tomatoes. So that’s his job now, hanging out under the tomato plants.
