the $3.99 mid-winter tomato

I don’t usually eat tomatoes in the winter. But by mid-feb I’m REALLY hungry for one. I saw a pretty “heirloom” tomato at Whole Foods. A 16 oz tomato at $3.99/lb. (Wow! Multiply that by the number of tomatoes you grow in the summer!) Oh well – it did have a brief tomato smell as I sliced it. And looked (ahhh…) …nice. I don’t have the best report on its flavor though. After a preview of the taste I added lots of garlic and capers, etc… It was … mealy…

Sunday night pizza

I wanted to share a photo of the delicious pizza we’ve been making often this winter. The sauce is from my garden last summer. I threw in many different tomato varieties, some carrots, basil, onions, cooked it down and froze it. The pizza also has the last of the cayenne chiles I grew, dried and crumbled. A delicious pizza. A taste of my garden on winter weekends. We make a fairly simple pizza. My son makes the dough in the bread machine. A simple recipe from Beard on Bread, by…

my last garden tomatoes

This is about it for my garden tomatoes. The green tomatoes I picked a couple weeks ago are now ripening and we’re enjoying them in salads. Though this year’s wet weather gave me a small harvest, the variety was nice. I grew ten different types of heirlooms and hybrids. The late producing varieties (in this photo) are Purple Calabash (purple and green fruit) and Oxheart Red (wonderfully meaty and tomato red). I’m partial to the ‘tomato red’ colored fruits. tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum)

ripe red tomatoes

Giant Belgium tomatoes Tomango tomatoes Oxheart Red and Big Beef tomatoes The tomatoes in my home garden are just now starting to ripen fast. They look beautiful. Not many, so I’ll focus on quality. I am pleased to see them because the tomatoes in my community plot were early and died fast. I have pulled the vines already. My husband suggested planting tomatoes in both locations. Not my idea. But was good to have two plantings this year. My favorite tomato is Giant Belgium. Certainly not a giant in my…

making red sauce

With four big bowls full of ripe tomatoes on my counter, last night I made up a quick red sauce. This was the real quick version. Just chop, cook, remove skins, then freeze. Oh, and lick out the pan – it was VERY tasty! I think the mix of so many varieties made it taste so good. tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum) Skippy’s vegetable recipes

This is a Brandywine. I took photos of a Giant Belgian tonight and hope to post them soon. This second variety is a new one for me and very much like a Brandywine but even meatier and bigger. I think I will list these two as my favorites, though neither produces many tomatoes. Quality, not quantity…. tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum)

Time to celebrate the beauty of tomatoes! Right now they are in abundance. I have a number of different kinds of heirloom and hybrid varieties of all different colors and sizes. My favorite are the Brandywine and Giant Belgian, which are very similar. The Beefsteak are delicious and prolific too. My earliest tomato by far this year was Orange Blossom. The consensus around here is that this year has been a very bad year for tomatoes. Much too much rain. Even the best gardeners at my community garden say they…

my first tomato

My orange tomatoes have ripened first this year. This is a variety called Orange Blossom. Perfectly ripe today. I had a few slices on their own, the rest on a yummy steak sandwich for lunch. And then I had a second ripe orange tomato in a fresh potato salad for dinner. Delicious! Of five Farmer’s Market tomatoes I tried together last year, Orange Blossom one was the tastiest. It will look very nice with red and purple tomatoes when they ripen. For the past three years now, my first ripe…
