signs of spring – despite the snow

1. The squirrels are making a commotion chasing each other along the fence.2. Chickadees are singing their spring song and flying in pairs.3. My local hardware store has their seeds racks up. (They’ve added an additional rack this year – sign of a big year ahead for gardeners I think).4. The Red Sox are heading south for spring practice.5. winter solstice

The shortest and darkest day of the year. But definitely a cause for celebration! Our days now begin to lengthen. I much prefer the seasons with lengthening days – every day is brighter than the day before. In the Northern Hemisphere, the Winter Solstice occurs on December 21, 2008 at 7:04 AM EST and 12:04 UT (Universal Time).

first frost (a light frost) at my community plot

It looks like my community garden plot had a light frost both of the past two nights. My tender crops (beans and eggplants) were killed yesterday and today the tops of my marigolds look singed. My semi-hardy (beets, carrots and endive) and hardy crops (broccoli, kale, peas and radish) (source) are doing fine. I will make a notation for my calendar for next year that these beans were planted too late for the community plot. They were just about to bloom. The last crop will need to go in 3…

Belmont Victory Gardens on longest day of the year

Our community gardens are beautiful right now. All of the 100-plus plots have been filled this year and there are so many active gardens. A lot of work has gone into these. Yesterday Skippy and I wandered through the overgrown and rocky paths and took many photos of the plots. No sense in showing just my garden with so many other nice ones around! They look nice viewed as a slide show (June Victory Garden slide show). By the way – tomorrow the local Boy Scout Troop will be doing…

summer lull in garden work

It seems to me there is a lull now in the the vegetable garden work. I’m not planting many seeds now and everything is fertilized. I go to the garden to weed and harvest a few minutes every day. It doesn’t even need much water now with all the afternoon thunderstorms we are getting. I can just sit back, enjoy the harvests and watch the tomato plants grow!

March comes in like a lion

Another snow storm is coming at us!! 8″ predicted here. I’ll get a photo soon. (just what we need – another snow photo….) While bemoaning the weather, I looked up what was going on in my garden last year on March 1. Pretty much the same. Snow. Cold. But the good news is that by the end of March, I had lots of sprouts and there were crocus and hellebore in the yard. I’ll keep that in mind during tomorrow’s snow fall.

signs of spring

I like to watch for signs of spring. Even though we are buried again under 10 inches of snow, there are some signs around. The water fowl are starting to pair off, the squirrels are chasing each other with great excitement, and the hellebore buds are swelling (I peeked last week before the snow). sure signs of spring
