two and a half feet of snow!
The official snowfall measurement for our area is 30-32 inches. I haven’t made the trek down to my garden yet. I’m not sure if I can. I think snow shoes or even skis will just sink into this fluffy snow.

I cleared a path to the chicken coop. The hens are fine. A bit of snow blew into their run, so when it finishes coming down and blowing around I’ll lay down fresh straw. The hens are mostly staying put inside the coop today. I can watch them with a remote camera in the run. Only Bertha, my big, heavily feathered Brahma, is spending any time in the run. I’m hearing some news about the storm being stalled over our area and that its not doing any weakening yet. So…
the eve of the big snow storm?…
All day today I’ve been hearing the words “historic”, “epic”, “snow-mageddon”, “a top 5 storm”. We are predicted to get 2-3 feet of snow with 50 mph winds all night and all day tomorrow. Other words I hear are “hunker down”, “school closures”, “state-of-emergency”, “power outages expected”. Wow. Well, I think we’re prepared. cold!!
37* F outside this morning. A light snow is falling but not accumulating. I wish I had covered my winter bed last night, but did not. So this morning I went down to the garden and pulled the plastic cover over the hoops. I also covered my fall lettuce bed with Agribon light weight row cover. It was a painful task. I was reminded the hard way that I need to wear mittens at that temperature. (Especially if I am taking pictures.) My hands were so cold. They stung for…
a perfect late summer day
It was a fantastic day for a Garden Tour! Sunny, low humidity, low 80’s. The fall garden colors are approaching. And the late summer harvests are in full swing. I have to admit that our Gardens did not get much of the Garden Tour traffic. We’re the outsiders. We got a couple visitors. But our new-effort fund raising did quite well with just the standard Meadow walking traffic. Most walkers seemed happy to consider a donation or to buy T-shirt. forced forsythia
I have always wanted to be able to force forsythia. Our new house has lots of it around to cut. It bloomed within a couple days of bringing it inside. I suppose it won;t be long til its in bloom outside.
winter
We have about 2 feet of snow everywhere. I have to use snow shoes to walk to the end of my backyard where I’ll dig my new garden in a couple months. Skippy and Suzie sink in up to their bellies in the snow. And my poor chickens haven’t been out of their coop in weeks. But the sun is getting bright. Its noticeably higher in the sky – coming up over the tops of the tall pines by 9 am now. Our forecast is for a couple more inches…
This is a journal of my vegetable gardens. Skippy thinks the garden is his, even though I do all the work. We're located near Boston, in USDA zone 6.
