Our weather has turned into beautiful springtime the past few days. Temps only went down to 60F last night and the baby tomato plants (in pots still) stayed outside. Everything is growing nicely. I am starting to think that we may not get any more frosts – in my sheltered home garden at least. Yesterday I went ahead and planted sunflower seeds outside. I think bean seeds can go in soon too. Maybe the squash and tomato plants can be transplanted soon! Spring comes so fast once it starts! I’ve…

Here’s an aerial view of my side-yard vegetable garden today. Still half a foot of snow. Rain today, but more snow is in the forecast. aerial views of my home vegetable garden

Maybe I can post an “after” view soon. After taking this picture, I cleaned up all the summer crops. I have a big bag of winter rye seed to plant soon, hopefully tomorrow morning – before Noel waters for me. My garden is supposed to get an inch of rain and 40-50 mph winds tomorrow afternoon from Noel, the tropical hurricane now a Nor’easter and heading up the US coast. aerial views of my home vegetable garden

end of the summer

With only two days left to summer, here’s a late afternoon shot of my garden from the upstairs window. Today I removed the row covers from the broccoli and kale since I haven’t seen any white butterflies around in a while. The plants look pretty good. The extra broccoli seedlings that I didn’t cover were eaten almost to nothing. I’ll eventually post photos of these two. Also today, I got out my hoe and prepared some soil for my fall lettuce. I have some seedlings I planted several weeks ago.…

fading summer

It looks like summer is winding down. The seed heads are drying on my zinnias. Summer crops are fading. Even though the fall crops are perking up, the garden has a different feel to it now. Its time to gather the harvest and save seeds for next year. “summer’s lease hath all too short a date” Shakespeare I haven’t been doing much in the garden this week. I picked lots of tomatoes, cucumbers and chile peppers of course. And this weekend I planted some radish seeds in the sunniest spot…

summer garden

An aerial view of my vegetable garden. I took this picture at 10:45 am. The sun has reached the beds at the right, and will gradually move leftward. The far left beds get full sun at 12:30. Every year, the big old maple tree in my backyard gets a little bigger and my garden gets a little more shade. aerial views of my home vegetable garden

a tour of Skippy’s vegetable garden

I have been experimenting with video’s. This is a 1 minute tour of my garden early this morning. (I have to warn that it’s pretty poor quality video.) The first garden bed has fading peas (Capucijner and sugar snaps) and lettuce, the next bed has beans, basil and carrots, then comes kale and broccoli and back by the fence are the big leaves of summer squashes. After the gate are my recently transplanted cucumbers on their trellis and then the giant tomato vines. Last of all Skippy comes over and…

I have some garden helpers who are removing the big old rhododendron at the lower right end of my garden. Its a several day project to chop it into pieces and pack them into garbage cans for removal. The bush was shading my tomatoes and potatoes quite a bit, so I finally decided it should go. It turned out to be a fun project for my garden helpers who just happened to have a new saw-type tool to try out. My dad has looked into composting rhododendrons for me and…

after vacation

Scenes from the garden after our return from a brief vacation: (from top left) there are a couple good sized heads of broccoli, endive Natasha is heading up, garlic scapes are ready for picking, soybeans have lots of tiny buds, MANY baby zucchinis, purple podded beans have purple flowers, baby cucumbers are forming, purple pods of the Capucijner peas are drying, a June planting of romaine lettuce looks good. Also looking good are my great big potato plants, green beans hanging on the plants, pumpkin vines are several feet long,…
