I’ve been spending some time with my parents. Today I planted: Potatoes, Red Gold, 5 ft row Potatoes, Fingerling, 5 ft row Potatoes, Russet, 5 ft row Dill, 5 ft row garlic transplants, 8 ft row Dad’s peas are up 2 inches now. Lots of them. Lettuce and beets from direct seedings too. My dad likes rows really straight. I planted 2 rows for him and did my best. The kids from next door ran over and helped lay out the spuds. They gave them names and said they will…

I took this photo in the middle of the hot day today. 81*F! Isn’t there usually a season between winter and summer? I have been using April 30 (this Thursday) as my last frost date. Looks like it was actually mid April this year. This morning, before it got hot, I cleared debris from the old beds and piled some fresh compost into them. I’ll spread it and turn the soil next. Then its ready for planting. My big new bed shows in the bottom right. Bright and sunny. Its…

It looks messy now, but soon I’ll post the “after” photo. I have great plans in action. My husband is putting in a new bed adjacent to the house – a large deep raised bed. And with the fantastic weather predicted for the weekend, I expect to clear out the old beds and transplant lettuce. Maybe even some beans seeds. If you click here you can see how this area looked 3 months ago. Thanks goodness its spring!aerial views of my home vegetable garden

my dad’s garden is ready to go

My dad moved his garden a little this year, 3 feet away from the trees that are growing taller at the right. In the foreground he has already planted a few rows – peas and lettuce. The deer fence isn’t up yet, though I suppose that will come soon. The deer have been eating lots of tulips and iris around their yard. Its hard to defend the sprouts again these big hungry animals. I’m planing to plant some popcorn and maybe potatoes and broccoli at the far side of the…

These photos show the amount of sun my garden gets at 1:00 in the winter. Not so much with a big house to the south. But the sunlight is getting stronger now. Though its 24*F outside today, the snow is melting nicely in sunlit areas. (Yeah!) Looks like I need to get out there and shovel that path again. I’m still meaning to try some mid winter kale. The kale is down there under the snow somewhere.

Bitter cold and snow covered, but the kale is very good. Those are my footprints from picking kale. And the paw prints of my buddy.aerial views of my home vegetable garden

We got about 8 inches (as predicted). The kale is just barely sticking out of the snow. I’ll have to make some kale soup soon as its tastes best when picked from under the snow. I have a couple potatoes and a leeks for tonight, but will look forward to kale and kielbasa soup soon.

Here are photos I took yesterday of my two vegetable garden plots. The top one is my home garden and the bottom is my community plot. Not much work going on in the community garden. I brought home the last of my garden tools and pulled a bunch of carrots yesterday. I still have several crops growing: broad leaved escarole, snap peas, Chinese greens, arugula, kale, lot of beets and radish. I got my home garden winterized yesterday. I heavily mulched my kale, parsley and gnome (poor gnome). If the…
