The tomatoes are in! They are in the foreground here, with hay mulch between them. I planted 20 plants, 16 different varieties. Solanum lycopersicum
1st harvest of the season
Today I picked our first garden vegetables. Tender pea tendrils, garlic greens, rosemary sprigs and parsley. We briefly roasted the peas, garlic and rosemary over a hot flame and served these with grilled halibut, shrimp, baby potatoes and as always a BIG salad. Delicious. Thanksgiving harvest
Today I harvested my Swiss chard and beets. Also, many carrots – maybe half of my remaining crop. It’s the day before Thanksgiving. We’ve been cooking all day. I’ll serve these garden vegetables tomorrow. Daucus carota beets (Beta vulgaris)
still more garden tomatoes
I haven’t bought a tomato since the end of July! Looks like my 18 tomato plants produced 4 months of tomatoes. At two a night, that’s alot of tomatoes. I’ve almost forgotten what the styrofoam grocery store tomatoes taste like. Last night we ate a nice yellow Brandywine that I picked green a month ago. still more pole beans
I went to take down these pole beans yesterday and found many beans still on the vine. New small ones coming along too. I picked enough for a good meal and we ate them last night. So I left the vines up. It seems like a very late season to me. I don’t have any gardening records, so I can’t really compare. But I hear about snow and cold weather elsewhere in the US. It seems late for Boston to be still growing beans with no frost yet. Our forecast…
the end of tomato season
We have a frost warning in our area for tonight, so I harvested all of the tomatoes and pulled up the vines. I picked all of the tomatoes: green, pinkish and red. There were quite a lot of them hidden under the leaves out there. Its a chilly day here, in the 50s, with no breeze. The cold air that left the midwest under a lot of snow is moving our way. another basil harvest
Well, it sure was a good year for basil. I have always thought a second harvest was possible, but have never actually gotten one. This year we have had two big batches of basil. The first was in late August when I cut the plants down leaving about 5 inches of stem and a few leaves. During September, the plants regrew to their original height. This weekend I cut the entire plant off and cleared out the beds. I think we’ll get a frost in a week or two anyway.…
harvest day!
A big harvest today! It was such a beautiful warm and sunny day, I really enjoyed my few minutes of “work” in the garden. Lots of beans – both bush and pole beans. A few tomatoes, several hot peppers, a lot of cukes and several baby yellow summer squash. The best – three big eggplants. I’ve been looking forward to picking these. carrot harvest
My carrots are ready to pull. Here’s a nice one. About 5 or 6 inches I think. And fat. And only a little bifurcated. And delicious. An interesting sweet and very carroty taste that you don’t get in the store bought ones. We ate this one fresh – carrot chip slices. Daucus carota
tomato bowl
My counter top bowl is staying full of tomatoes. That’s a yellow Brandywine on top. Something new I found and am looking forward to trying. We eat tomatoes for lunch and dinner now, and I will have to start putting some away. I’m trying to remember what I like to do with them. One easy thing is to just slice and freeze in baggies. They are great on homemade pizzas.
This is a journal of my vegetable gardens. Skippy thinks the garden is his, even though I do all the work. We're located near Boston, in USDA zone 6.
