I have been picking two types of cucumbers this year. A few beautiful long cukes and a lot of small round and very seedy cukes. I’m trying to figure out which variety they are, so I don’t grow the round ones again. My cucumber vines have all grown together and I’m not sure which is what. I have a fun photo “art” program I like to play with. These are some of my favorites. I would post about the gardening work I did today, but it was pretty unexciting. (Half an hour of path work at the community garden – clipping the 10 ft weeds hanging into the paths. And half an hour of pulling weeds in the expansion area of my plot. The good news is I’m nearly done with weed pulling for my plot expansion. Maybe I’ll finish tomorrow.)

fancy new sign for our community gardens

My son completed his Boy Scout Eagle project this week. He has been working on Path Restoration at the Belmont Community Gardens. Earlier this summer, he organized a service day where volunteers helped clear rocks and debris from the grass pathways. And this week he installed a sign that he and his dad made. We made a bit more progress in removing the weeds in the space where I will expand my plot. Still more weeds to pull….. We also got the old chain saw running again. I think next week we’ll need it for some stump removal. community plot expansion project

Jeepers. It turns out the weight of my “giant” pumpkin is only 10.4 lbs…. 🙁 Well, it certainly looks more like a 20 lb pumpkin to me.

Skippy and the great pumpkin

For years I have been trying to grow a giant pumpkin. I am so pleased to harvest this beauty today! Here it is. Fully documented with photos. The variety is Big Rock, seeds are from Johnny’s. I grew four plants – two at my community plot and two at home. Only one fruit set – this one! It bloomed in late July at my community plot, grew fast, then turned orange this week. It was resting a rock and got a bit scarred on one side before a fellow gardener…

Giant Belgium tomatoes Tomango tomatoes Oxheart Red and Big Beef tomatoes The tomatoes in my home garden are just now starting to ripen fast. They look beautiful. Not many, so I’ll focus on quality.
