My first ripe tomato was today. A nice little sungold cherry. I didn’t get a good photo of it. This is about 2 weeks earlier than I usually get my first tomato.
tomato supports – where to tie the twine
I’m not really sure where the bottom of the string is tied in this type of tomato support, which I am using for the second year. Last year I tied to stem of the plant. This year, I tied the twine to a pole weighted down by a brick. Works well so far. Does anyone recommend another method? My plants are tiny this year. 🙁 Not enough sun. I won’t grow tomatoes in these beds again – until a tree or two comes down.
vegetables for vacation
I made a couple of really nice vegetable dishes on vacation for a big family gathering. Above are some pretty beets. A mix of all three varieties I am growing: Chiogga, Lutz and White Detroit. I also made a big dish of fava beans (podded, sauteed, and mixed with sauteed corn and carrots) and a couple big dishes of summer squash (saute sliced Vidalia onions, then add sliced squash and saute til done).
baby rabbit
Upon retuning from a week of vacation I find that my garden has been found by a baby rabbit. The cutest little bunny I have seen! I watched through the window as he hopped around in my cold frame (which is now a hot frame) and he very nicely chose the weeds to nibble on. Grasses and pigweed. He avoided the melons and cucumbers and broccoli. He didn’t eat the sunflower seedlings. He did eat the two baby soy bean seedlings still in plastic trays – oh well. Now this…
irrigation in the HOT weather
How about this heat and dry weather!! What a difference from last year. My plants seem to be deep rooted enough to go for 3-4 days without water, even though we have temps well into the 90’s (F) all day. Then they need a long deep watering. This is great for avoiding fungal problems (like last years late blight). I’m hoping for a nice tomato harvest starting soon. I thought maybe my potatoes would be ready and pulled up a plant last Friday. Not! (I put away potato salad recipe.)…

pumpkin on the counter
I suppose this is an unusual photo for summer. Its a pumpkin I grew in my garden last year. I’ve enjoyed having its nice bright orange color on my counter all winter and spring. Its a Jarrahdale, a blue/gray pumpkin that ripened to orange midwinter. A really good keeper. This pumpkin is finally getting spots and so today I’m putting it out to the compost bin. 🙁 I have a couple of new Jarrahdale plants in my garden that are growing fast in the heat. I’m looking forward to more…
