mail ordered seeds

new seeds

Here are seeds from my last mail order. I am trying seeds from an Asian seed catalog for the first time: Kitazawa. They look really interesting!

Also a bunch here from an old favorite: Botanical Interests. I love their plant drawings. I was pleased to spot their Komen for the Cure seeds – Celebration in Pink cosmos. An over-sized package with a donation to breast cancer research. I bought extra so I can share, since bc research is my profession.

  • I love BI, have had great success with all of their seeds–except the cosmos (not that one). I think I was putting it in too-rich soil, as I got lovely greenery.
It has returned to dreary cold misery in the mid-Atlantic, so it's nice to look at cheerful seed packets!

  • Kitazawa has neat stuff, i have gotten their catalog for a number of years and often wanted to order something.
I bet those cosmos will be a beautiful mix. I love cosmos.

BTW, how much snow is your area expecting for Friday and what preparations will you be taking if any?
In my area of southeastern Maine we are told anywhere from 6 to 12 inches- unless it rains instead. I am hoping for rain!

  • I just heard we are "probably" getting 1.7 inches of snow. I only have plants in my cold frame so far and it can handle snow fine. I will probably put the tarp over the top to protect the plastic, just in case we get we get more, or any heavy ice. More importantly, I will make sure I have sufficient martini supplies.

  • I've had good results with BI as well. They were the only non-Burpee seeds I could find locally until I discovered a nearby nursery carrying Seed Savers.

  • Having a splash of colors in the garden area can be simply done by choosing native flowering plants but blossom different colors.

  • Thanks for the note about the seeds at Seeds of Change. I just checked their site and they say they gave away all 100 M seeds in less than 2 days and aren't doing this any more 🙁 Too bad – our gardeners always love free seeds and I forgot to get any this year for our Spring Work Day next Saturday.
