  • The rose is quite ugly now. After a burst of beauty, no more buds and leaves are shriveling and brown. I think because of this, its probably not Falstaff but maybe an earlier variety. I also think, because there are several bushes and stems of this rose here and there on fences near my garden, that it is growing on its own rootstock. Another reason to think its an older variety.

    My husband tells me I misspelled FAQ in this post. At 1:25 am, what can you expect?

  • Hi Kathy- totally unrelated question here….The fruit forming on my eggplant has been white in color. One fruit recently darkened quite a bit to a purple-brown color, this extends up into the green foliage that covers the stem end of the fruit.

    This seems like a disease symptom to me, but I am having trouble finding a conformation on this. I do have leaf spots.

    Have you ever experienced this, is changing of fruit color a normal occurance?

    How is the foliage color and condition on the plants? If its good, I think maybe the discoloration is just over ripened fruit.

    A couple years ago I grew white eggplant and noticed they darkened when I left them on the plant too long. They turned yellowish brown and were tough, seedy and bitter inside.

    Its hard to know when they are ripe. I left them on the plant hoping for bigger fruits.

    I've read that eggplant can get late blight, but I think this is pretty rare and I can't find any descriptions of it, so I don't think that's it, especially if the leaves look good.

    The main disease eggplants get is Verticillium wilt. This makes the lower leaves turn yellow and brown and then, as the name implies, the leaves wilt and the plant dies. I've have lots of trouble with this in past years. Its a problem with cool weather and alkaline soil.
