My potatoes have arrived! I ordered 5 varieties from Moose Tubers in Maine. Way back in mid January. I have the bed all planned out. I need to turn it and then dig trenches and then the taters can go in. I have the following: F. Fingerling (1 lb), Dk R Norland (2.5 lbs), Rio Grande Russet (2.5 lb), Red Gold (2.5 lb), and Green Mtn (2.5 lbs). That’s 10 lbs of regular potatoes and 1 lb of fingerlings. watching for spring birds

They are finally arriving! Last year I saw bluebirds in the meadow by the gardens on April 11, so I’m watching for flashes of blue. The birds I saw yesterday include a few spring migrants and a lot of NE residents: white-crowned sparrow, eastern phoebe, red-winged blackbirds, lots of American robins, one lonely cold tree swallow, chickadees, nuthatch, downy woodpecker, ring-necked pheasant (no visual), starlings, and blue jays. I found a FANTASTIC magazine! GROW, a special issue on vegetable gardening from Fine Gardening. I’m reading it word-by-word and enjoying all the photos. It was great to find it displayed right up front by the registers at the super market. It has sections on types of wood for garden use. A great section on manure. And lots of gardening tips. new beds, new plan

I made up a new garden plan. Similar to my earlier plan – but a few changes. One of the important things was to figure out where to put the asparagus bed. I think the spot on the north side next to the compost bin will work well. My parents offered me some space in their garden. I think I’ll try my popcorn there, and my winter squash. I was told that corn gets eaten in our community garden. I’d like to find out more about this. Someone told me…

Last fall I planted a few species tulips and a couple daffodils bulbs in my community plot. The tulips were blooming yesterday on plot assignment day. A pretty magenta shade of red. Tulipa humilis ‘Violacea black base’

What a great day! It was fantastic to see so many gardeners today! We assigned about 20 plots to new gardeners. The cool thing was, since so many people came to help with clean up, we cleared the entire front entrance area (about 1000 sq ft of weeds and brush), removed several brush piles, cleared debris from paths, AND cleared space for four or five new plots. We also made a good start at clearing another area (next to my plot) where we eventually will have a number of additional…
