Amazing how fast beans grow! Yesterday there were no signs of sprouts and today lots of 1 or 2 inch plants. These are Italian Pole Beans and Haricots Verts bush beans that I planted two weeks ago. Fabaceae
peppers planted
Good news about all my chili pepper seedlings. I have successfully found good homes for all 90 plants! Some to my parents, some to a friend of theirs, some to a friend of mine and some to a friend of my friend. Then another 20 are happily mulched in my vegetable garden. The last 10 plants I snuck in among my flowers in the perennial beds. Capsicum
zucchini sprouts
The zucchini is up. A little yellow on the edges. I don’t think it liked all the rain. That’s OK – were having zucchini weather this week – sunny and warm.
transplanting peppers
This year I raised one type of plant indoors from seed – peppers. They are a mix of five types of chili peppers. I made the pots from strips of newspapers. Today I planted them, paper and all. The pots worked great. They held together well. And even without bottoms the roots held the dirt in the pots. The only problem, I have room for 20 and I raised 90 plants! Chili peppers anyone? baby tomato plants
This looks like a family portrait of tomatoes! (Everyone line up and smile!) I have collected quite a few plants (35) and will give half to my parents. I have the following varieties: Moskvich (1), New Girl (1), Early Girl (6), Big Beef (6), Rutgers (1), Big Boy (1), Chadwich Cherry (1), Marglobe (6), Big Girl (6) and Brandywine (6). planting squash seeds
Skippy and I planted squash seeds today. Its a really sunny warm day (80 F) and I’m guessing the soil is above 60 F now. I turned over the soil to mix in all the compost I added to the squash bed. Looks like great soil. I put the cucumber trellis at the back of the bed and made three hills for three different types of summer squash at the front of the bed. I planted seeds for two types of cucumbers (Diva and Striped Armenian) and three summer squashes…
planting begonia tubers
It seemed like a good day for planting begonias. I found 6 old pots in my garage. I hope these will be nice plants by Father’s day. My dad always appreciates a nice begonia.
pea sprouts!
These are sugar snap peas planted on April 9th. It took them 2 weeks to sprout. I now have garlic, parsley, lettuce and peas growing! Pisum sativum
spring planting
The weather is great for growing vegetables. I have a lot of garden work to do. I picked up some row markers today, because I’m planting more seeds than I can remember. Today I planted fava beans, peas {green and Capucijner), and carrots (Oxhart, red cored chantenay and purple). I’ve never seen fava bean seeds before – they’re enormous! I used rhizobia inoculant with all of my peas and with the fava beans. I’m hoping this gives the seedlings a boost and gets them off to a good start.Vicia faba
