My sweet potatoes have started to make cute little sprouts! Yippee! I remembered at the last minute to save a few of my homegrown sweet potatoes for sprouting. The last ones were the smallest – a mix of white (Hannah), oranges (Jewel and Beauregard) and reds (Garnet). For years, I’ve had trouble getting sweet potatoes to sprout at our old house. planting garlic

I was late to plant, but finally planted 75 cloves of garlic. Less than my usual 100 cloves, but all were very big and I spaced them so they used the whole bed that I usually use for 100 cloves. The variety is mostly “Music”, a second year planting. I planted the garlic in my community plot. I’ve decided to keep my plot another year. Next year, I’ll work on getting my new home garden going, but since the soil is so hard, that will take some time.

I’m preparing these seedlings for transplanting soon. They’ve been coddled by staying inside under artificial lights. “Hardening off” will gradually get them used to wind, bright sunlight and temperatures variations. Our temperatures are really nice now – staying above 40*F at night – so the seedlings are staying out day and night for a few days.

planting seeds

I spread a towel on the living room floor tonight and planted a tray of seeds. Skippy kept his eye on the project. I planted broccoli, kale, lettuce, endive, radicchio, and eggplant. (I need to order my potatoes too. I’ve decided on just two varieties this year: Russet Burbank and German Butterball from FEDCO Moose Tubers.)

I have three sweet potato varieties sprouting: Beauregard, Jewel and Hannah. I am keeping them at 80*F, as they don’t seem to grow at all at cooler temperatures. Still, they are growing slowly.

tiny new onion sprouts!!

I found a first onion sprout today. Yippee!! I guess one of the reasons onions and celeriac are planted first is that they sprout slow and they grow slow. I’m wishing I had sowed a few broccolis just to get things going! This evening, I used a toothpick and checked around in the onion pots for sprouts. Since I like to use up my old seed, and onion seed doesn’t last long, I often have trays that don’t sprout. The Pontiac onions are sprouting, but apparently not Frontier, Ruby Ring,…

I planted 5 six-packs of seeds yesterday. Three varieties of onions (Pontiac, Ruby Ring and Frontier), plus leeks and celeriac. Yippee, the season has begun!!!

tiny little sweet potato sprouts!
